Histological features of meniscal injury
نویسنده
چکیده
Background: Meniscus tissue is highly susceptible to injury and tears. As these are intrasynovial and lack cellularity, their healing potential is less. Any knowledge to the factors affecting the meniscal healing can help surgeons in treating meniscal injuries. Hypothesis: Patient age is a predictor of the healing of meniscus tissue. Study Design: Prospective study. Methods: Gross and histologic evaluation of torn meniscus tissue from 30 patients and 10 control menisci were performed. Histologic scoring system was used to access the tissue healing Results: Patients’ age had a significant effect on the healing intention of the torn meniscus, with patients older than 40 years having significantly fewer meniscus cells than did those younger than 40 years. Further studies are needed to define the relative importance of the individual histologic findings in the clinical setting of meniscus tear and repair. Clinical Relevance: Our findings show that menisci from patients older than 40 years may be more vulnerable to degeneration and re tear after repair than are menisci of younger patients.

Clinical Results of Meniscal Repair Using Submeniscal Horizontal Sutures
Background: Parts of the implants placed over the meniscus during meniscal repair can wear down the cartilage in the contact zones and cause chronic synovitis. Placing horizontal sutures under the meniscus may overcome this potential hazard. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the midterm results of arthroscopic meniscal repair using submeniscally placed out-in horizontal sut...

Background: Meniscus tear is a common finding in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and may affectthe natural history of the injury and the outcomes of treatment. In the current study, the characteristics of meniscus tearsin patients who underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction were investigated. Methods: The hospital records of 1022 patients were reviewed. ...
متن کامل“Meniscal” scar as a landmark for the joint line in revision total knee replacement
AIM To determine whether tissue identified at the joint line was actually remnant "meniscal" scar tissue or not. METHODS Nine patients undergoing revision knee surgery following informed consent had meniscal scar tissue sent to the histology department for analyses. All revisions were performed where joint line had been raised or lowered at earlier surgery. Although preoperative radiographic ...
متن کاملMeniscal Roots: Current Concepts Review
Meniscal root tears are defined as radial tears located within 1 cm from the meniscal attachment or a bony rootavulsion. This injury is biomechanically comparable to a total meniscectomy, leading to compromised hoop stressesresulting in decreased tibiofemoral contact area and increased contact pressures in the involved compartment. These changes are detrimental to the articular cartilage and ult...
متن کاملDynamic loading enhances integrative meniscal repair in the presence of interleukin-1.
OBJECTIVE Meniscal tears are a common knee injury and increased levels of interleukin-1 (IL-1) have been measured in injured and degenerated joints. Studies have shown that IL-1 decreases the shear strength, cell accumulation, and tissue formation in meniscal repair interfaces. While mechanical stress and IL-1 modulate meniscal biosynthesis and degradation, the effects of dynamic loading on men...
